NICU's love this hat since it is easy to place on babies heads, gentle and stretchy. This hat will fit a 1-1 1/2 lb preemie
copyrighted hat photo!
Size 3 (Size 10 UK needles) double pointed knitting needles (you will need 4 needles) - for delicate skin on a baby this small, it's best if there are no seams.
Scraps of very soft (non-wool content) sock yarn or baby yarn (#1 or 2 weight), even fingering yarn would be good
Beanie is made in the round, and is approx 3" tall

Beanie in the round (It's better for preemies if you don't have a seam)
Cast on 40 sts for 1 - 1 1/2 lb preemie-- split the stitches as evenly as possible onto 3 needles  14, 14, 12 sts
Knit 2, purl 2 around for 24 rows
Decrease:
Knit 2 together around for 2 rows.  Where you can't knit 2 together, just knit that 1 stitch.
End - Cut yarn leaving an 8" tail.
Run needle and yarn through remaining sts on needle.  Pull to draw shut. Weave the yarn tail back and forth a few times on the inside of the hat to anchor yarn.
