Crocheted Winter Gear
(Mittens, hat, scarf and slippers made with a G (4mm) or H (5mm) hook)

Here are several easy to crochet patterns for very needed winter items.  They are each good, purse sized carry-along projects and are perfect for donating to your local shelters, or for making for gifts for family and friends!

(NOTE: Mittens are crocheted in one piece lengthwise.)

Materials: size G or H crochet hook (depending on your own tension)  and 2-3 oz of 4 ply worsted yarn or wool.

Chain 55 (5-7years)   63 (8-12 years)   77 (teen/adult years)
Row 1: Sc into next  7(7)(7) chs to form cuff (you will be going into the 2nd ch from hook and into back loops ONLY), sl st next 3 sts for wrist, sc in next 15 (19)(26) sts for hand, sl st next 4 sts for top, sc in next 15 (19) (26) sts for hand, sl st next 3 sts for wrist, sc in next 7 (7)(7) sts for cuff, ch 1 to turn all rows.
Row 2: Working through back loops, sc into each sc and sl st in each sl st of previous row.
Repeat Row 2 for desired width of hand (usually 6-8 ridges).

Hat will fit a child from aged 4- pre-teen. (Adult size)  This makes a lovely stretchy hat!
4 oz of worsted weight yarn and a Size G or H hook

Ch 41 (47) sts
Foundation row: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each ch to end of ch.

Ch 1 and turn.
2nd row: Working thru back loops only of each st throughout, work 1 sc in each st to end of row. Ch 1 and turn.
3rd row: 1 sc in each of 1st 32 (36)sts. Ch 1 and turn.
4th row: 1 sc in each st to end of row. Ch 1 and turn.
5th row: 1 sc in each st across entire row. Ch 1. Turn.
Repeat last 4 rows till work along widest edge measures 15 inches, ending with 3rd row. Fasten off.  
To make up: Sew back seam. Gather short edge of Toque and fasten securely.
Make a pompom as follows and sew pompom to Toque. Wind wool around 4 fingers 75 times. Remove fingers and tie yarn tightly in the center.
Cut through each side of loops and trim to a smooth, round shape.

Attach pompom to crown.


Bev's Simple Sock Yarn Headband

Fits teenagers
Size H crochet hook
1/2 oz self-striping machine washable sock yarn and 1/2 oz Red Heart Yarn  4 ply worsted weight yarn
(Using 2 strands held together throughout, work in the Back Loops of stitches to form a ridge)

Ch 12 - 14 for width
Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across row, ch 1 and turn
Rows 2 – 58 – or 1" - 1.5" less than circumference of head: (Work in back loops) Sc in the 2nd sc from hook and in each sc across row.  Ch 1 and turn at end of each row.
End off with a 10" yarn tail.  Stitch seam shut and weave in ends.

Size G or H Hook    So, with a size H (5mm) hook, you'll need approx. 400 yards of #4 medium weight yarn (Gauge: 3 sts = 1"  4 rows = 1")
Ch 21 (28)
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and then in each ch across. Ch 1, turn

Row 2: sc in 2nd st from hook and in each st across, working in the back loops only to form a ridge.
Repeat row 2 until the scarf is approximately 4' long. (or desired length)  



BEV'S WINTER SLIPPERS

Size H hook, use a G hook for kids
2 oz WW yarn
I used a single strand of Red Heart worst weight yarn, but you could make them warmer with a 2nd strand of sock yarn or fingering yarn. You could also make these a few rows longer for men. They stretch really nicely too. These fit women shoe size 7-10

RND 1: Ch 2 then make 12 dc in the 2nd chain from the hook. Join with a sl st to the top of the original ch 2. (12 sts)
RND 2: Ch 2, make another dc in same st as ch 3, 2 dc in each dc around. Join with sl st in top of ch 2 of previous rnd. (24 sts)
RND 3: Ch 2, make another dc in same st as ch 3, *dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * 2 more times. Join. (27)

RND 4 - 10: Ch 2, dc in same st, dc in each dc around including the very last one. Join.
Row 11: (back of foot and heel)
Ch 2, dc in same st, then dc in next 19 dcs (leaving 6 dc un-worked). You are now going back and forth.
Row 12-17: Dc in 2nd chain from hook and in each dc across, including the very last dc.
Slip stitch the heel closed, matching stitch for stitch. Cut yarn with 4" tail and wave back inside the slipper.

Top
Add a contrasting color. Ch 2, and dc around foot opening. Join.
Rnd 2: Ch 2, dc in each dc around. Join.
Rnd 3: Ch 2 then alternate front post stitch and back post stitch around.
Cut yarn with 4" tail, weave back and forth inside slipper.
