BYU Women's Conference Hat pattern
We made these hats for shelters at BYU Women's Conference 2002. Easy and quick to do, plus you can use up scraps of yarn by placing colored stripes in the hats. Here is what you need, and how to crochet the hat. These are wonderful for shelters.

2 oz worsted weight yarn
Size I (5.5 mm) hook
hat

Hat pattern listed is School Kids Sized and Adult Sized, and is made in a rectangle (see photo) so you are starting at a 'side'. The stitches are made in the back loop only (BLO) throughout. That's what forms the ridges and makes it stretchy. For newborn size click here.

Chain 30, 39 sts
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1 and turn
Row 2: Sc in BLO of the 2nd sc from hook, ch 1 and turn
Repeat row 2 until you have 42, 54 rows

Fold hat in half from beginning row to the last crocheted row, and whipstitch seam shut.
Weave through top of hat and pull tightly. (It will be hard to close that gap completely, but you can stitch back and forth to close it, or add a pompom)

Baby - 6 to 12 months
Head Circumference: 16" - 19 " 41-48 cm ; Hat height = 7.5" 18 cm

Toddler - preschooler (12 months - 3 years)
Head Circumference: 18" to 20 " 46 -48 cm; Hat height = 8" 20 cm

Child (3 - 10 years)
Head Circumference: 19" - 20 1/2" 48-51 cm; Hat height =8.5" 22cm

Pre-teens and Teens Hat
Head Circumference: 20 1/2" - 22" 53 -56 cm; height 9-10" 25 cm

Adult Woman
Head Circumference: 21.5" - 22.5" Hat height = 11"

Adult Man
Head Circumference: 23" - 24" 58.4 cm - 61 cm; Hat height = 11"-11.5"
