This pattern was given to me by a lady in our Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Please do not place them on your site, do NOT sell them or items made from them! I have made a few adjustments to the pattern to make it easier to understand. CROCHETED PREEMIE HAT
(adjustments made by Beverly A. Qualheim 2006)
All rows are worked in back loop only (BLO) of each stitch to create ribbing for stretch.
Using size F hook and baby/sport weight yarn (Number 3 yarn) (Size G hook for newborn size)

Chain 35
Row 1: sc in 2nd chain from hook, sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (34 sc)
Row 2: sc in BLO of first 27 sc except leave the last 7 sts unworked. Ch 1, turn
Row 3: sc in BLO of each st across. Ch 1, turn (27 sc)
Row 4: sc in BLO back including the last 7 unworked sts you skipped in row 2. Ch 1, turn (34 sc)
Repeat these 4 rows 14 times till you have 56 rows (28 ridges)

Cut yarn leaving a 36" tail. Using a large eyed sewing needle, thread yarn and stitch the side seam shut by holding row 1 and row 56 together matching sts. Weave the needle in and out of the top sts of the hat, and pull tightly to gather the top. Back stitch 4 sts and cut yarn.

CROCHETED BOOTIES
Size F hook and baby yarn for preemie size (size G hook for newborn size)

LEG: Ch 15 (all rows are worked in BLO)
Row 1: Sc in 2nd chain from hook, sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (14 sc)
Row 2 - 20:Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (14 sts). At the end on row 20, do not fasten off.

INSTEP: With 2 yards of new yarn, join in end of 8th row of leg. (I count in past 4 ridges to the 5th ridge)
Row 1: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining sc and in end st of next 4 rows. Ch 1, turn (5 sts).
Rows 2-7: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (5 sts). Fasten off.
(You now have an upside down looking 'T' with a fat top to the T and a short thin stem)

FOOT: Pick up working yarn on the leg. (You will be working across, up, over, back down, and across the stem of the upside down T shape.)
Sc in the end sts across next 8 rows of leg.
Sc in end of next 7 sts of the instep.
Sc in BLO of next 5 sc.
SC BACK DOWN next 7 stitches of instep
Sc in end st of next 8 rows of leg.
Rows 2-7: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (35 sts)
Row 8: Sk first st, sc in next 14 sts (skip 1 st, sc in next) 3 times total, sc in next 12 sts, sk 1 st, sl st in last st. Ch 1, turn (29 sts)
Row 9: Sk first st, sc in next 11 sts, (sk 1 st, sc in next st) 3 times, sc in next 10 sts, sk 1 st, sl st in last st. Ch 1, turn (24 sts)
Row 10: Sk first st, sc in next 12 sts. With right sides facing, sl st corresponding sts of bottom edges together.

Whip stitch remaining portion of the foot and leg (or slip stitch shut). Fasten off, Eave in the ends

BLO = Back loop only, sk = skip, sc = single crochet, ch = chain, st = stitch, sl = slip.






KNITTED VERSIONS of UMC hat and booties (adjustments made by Beverly A. Qualheim 2014)

KNITTED PREEMIE HAT - knit in the round
Materials: Size 2 DP needles (preemies - 4-6 lbers),  and  Size 3 DP knitting needles for newborn 7-9 lbers hat.
Baby or Sport weight yarn 


With size 2 needles cast on 84 sts. Spread sts around evenly on 3 dpns using the 4th one to knit. Join so you knit in the round.
Rounds 1 - 20 :  Work k1, p1 rib around
Rounds 21 - 36:  Knit every row for 2"

Top of hat- decrease rows
Decrease Round 1: *K4, k2 tog*; rep from * around.
Decrease Round 2 and all even rounds: Knit.
Decrease Round 3: *K3, k2tog*; rep from * around.
Decrease Round 5: *K2, k2tog*; rep from * around.
Decrease Round 7: *K1, k2tog*; rep from * around.
Decrease Round 9: K2tog around.
Decrease Round 10: K2tog around.
Break yarn leaving a 6" tail. With yarn needle go through remaining sts on your knitting needle. Pull tightly to gather. Weave ends back and forth several times inside hat and snip yarn.


KNITTED PREEMIE BABY BOOTIES

Materials: Size 3 needles for small (up to 3 pounds), size 4 for large (3-5 pounds), Size 5 needles for newborn size.
Baby or sport weight yarn.
Cast on 32 sts loosely.
Rows 1- 11: Knit 

Row 12: K 14 sts, k2tog, (place stitch marker), k2tog, k 14.
Row 13: P 13, p2tog, (stitch marker), p2tog, p 13.
Repeat rows 12 and 13, decreasing 1 st before and after marker until there are 10 sts each side of marker (20 sts total).
Knit next 2 rows (remove stitch marker).
Next row: K 1, *YO, k2tog. Repeat from *, end with YO, k1 (21 sts total).
Next row: Knit across.
Next row: K 1, *inc in next st, k 2*: repeat from * to end (28 sts total).
Next 3 rows: K1, p1 rib.
Bind off loosely so bind off stretches with ribbing. Sew bootie together.
