size J (6 mm) crochet hook and 1 button 1.25" across
Chain 28 (fits preschoolers) Chain 34 (ages 5-10)
Gauge: 3 rows =2"
Row 1: Double crochet in the 4th chain from your hook. (your initial "chain" now counts as a double crochet).
♥Skip 1 chain, make 2 double crochets in next chain (makes a "V"), repeat from ♥ across. Chain 3 turn (except on last row).
Row 2: Make ONE Dc in middle of the first "V", ♥ skip next stitch, make 2 double crochets in middle of next "V", Repeat from ♥ across. Chain 3 and turn (You end up with 14 "V"s across; 18 "V"s for larger size.)
Repeat Row 2 until shawl is 26" (approx. 45 rows) long. 32" is a nice length to wrap around older children (approx. 56 rows) long.
End off and weave in ends.
Sew on large button at top neck. It will fit through the stitches on the other side! Plus if you want to:
Alternate edge 1: turn the shawl to go around bottom edge ch 3, 2 dc in between 1st and 2nd dcs, * skip a dc, 3 dcs in between 1st and 2nd dc. repeat from * across edge. End off and weave in end.
Alternate edge 2: Turn
the shawl to go around bottom edge ch 3 and then make a dc in between
1st and 2nd dcs all around. End off and weave in yarn end.
TIES:
Chain 115, 125 or long enough to weave in and out through top edge.
(Some hospitals/parents might not want the ties, just the button.)
