"Sub for Santa" Knit Beanie

Easy Knit Beanie Hat Pattern for a 6-8 Year-Old (9-12 year old)

If you would like to help make hats, mittens, and scarves for children here is a Sub for Santa in Roosevelt, Utah
Items are needed each year from September until November.


Materials:
Worsted weight yarn (approximately 100-130 yards)
Size 8 (4 mm) 16” circular knitting needles For larger beanie use size 10.5 (6.5mm)
Scissors and Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Gauge: Approximately 5 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch.
Made using multiples of 4  (for larger or smaller hats, adjust the number of sts and use a size 8 (4mm) needles)

Cast On: Cast on 64 stitches

Brim: Round 1-10: Knit 2, purl 2 across the row. Repeat these 10 rows until the brim measures about 2 inches from the cast-on edge, ending with a wrong side row.

sub4Round 11: PURL around.

Body: Now knit every row around until the hat measures approximately 6" from the cast-on edge. (Make it taller if you want to fold up the brim)

Now decrease the top…  


Round 1:
Knit 6, knit 2 together - repeat this pattern across the row. (56 stitches remaining)

Round 2: and all even rounds: Knit all stitches.

Round 3: Knit 5, knit 2 together - repeat this pattern around. (48 stitches remaining)

Round 5: Knit 4, knit 2 together - repeat this pattern around. (40 stitches remaining)

Round 7: Knit 3, knit 2 together - repeat this pattern aaround. (32 stitches remaining)

Round 9: Knit 2, knit 2 together - repeat this pattern around.(24 stitches remaining)

Round 11: Knit 1, knit 2 together - repeat this pattern around. (16 stitches remaining) (It's hard to get smaller using circ, so you can end here if needed.)

Round 13: Knit 2 together - repeat this pattern across the row. (8 stitches remaining)

Finishing: Cut the yarn, leaving a 12” long tail. Thread the yarn through the remaining stitches taking them off the needles and pull tightly to close the top of the hat. Weave yarn back and forth several times inside the hat to make sure it stays closed.
