Pearl's Memory Babies Hats & Blankets!

These lovely caps (and blankets) were created for Pearl's Memory Babies
I absolutely LOVE their special ministry to bring adorable baby dolls, stuffed dogs and cats to people dealing with dementia and Altzheimers.

We ALL need to be needed and to have something to care for that is just ours.  These babies bring that gift to these amazing people!
YOU can make hats and blankets (even newborn clothes) for this marvelous group too.
PLEASE mail items to:

Bev's Memory Baby Cap

capApprox. 200 yards (184 meters) soft, pretty #4 medium weight yarn
Size I (5.5 mm) hook (depending on how tightly you crochet)  scissors, yarn needle
Hat is about 6" tall, and measures 6.5" - 7" across the front - hat stretches. The dolls head measures 16.5" around. * PLEASE make sure newborn hats are 6" tall!

Abbreviations: Rnd = round; Ch = chain; sl st = slip stitch; dc = double crochet

TOP of hat - down:
Rnd 1: Chain 4, and join with a slip stitch to form a ring. Chain 3, (counts as a double crochet) then make 15 more double crochets  inside ring. Join with a slip stitch in top of 1st actual double crochet of previous round (not into the ch 3). (you have15 double crochets)
Rnd 2: Chain 3, dc into the base of the Ch 3. * 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc,  Repeat from * around making sure to dc into the base of the ch 3. (24 sts including ch3)
Join with a slip stitch in top of 1st dc of previous rnd.
Rnd 3: do it the same as the 2nd. (36 dcs including ch3)
Rnds 4 - 12: Ch 3 and make a dc in the same stitch, then dc in each dc around including into base of ch3 of the previous row, joining with a sl st in the top of the 1st dc of the round  you just finished..
You can do a final (rnd 12) loopy row of ch 4 skip a dc, sc into the next, ch 4, skip a dc, sc into the next etc.
You can also do rnd 11 and 12 using an alternating front post and back post dc. That gives it a bit of a brim.
Or sc around for an 11th and 12th row using an alternative color.

Bev & Sherry's Baby Blanket
Copyright Beverly A. Qualheim 2016, 2026

Blanket is approx. 33" square. A good size for these dolls is between 32" and 36" square. Fun colors are great!
Gauge: 2 rows =1"  3 V's  = 2"
Women's Conference scarf- bluesoft yarn

Worsted weight (#4) yarn approximately 860 yards (786 metres)
scissors, yarn needle

close shot of blanket stitch

size I (5.50 mm) crochet hook

Chain 88 (multiples of 2)

Row 1: Double crochet in the 4th chain from your hook. (your initial "chain"  now counts as a double crochet).

Skip 1 chain, make 2 double crochets in next chain (makes a "V"), repeat from  across. Chain 3 turn. (43Vs) If you have a few more that's ok.

Row 2:  Make ONE Dc in middle of the first "V",  skip next stitch, make 2 double crochets in middle of next "V", Repeat from  across.  Chain 3 and turn.

Repeat Row 2 until blanket is 32"  (about 64 rows) or desired length.  32" is a nice size  because this blanket is stretchy and you can wrap it around the doll for more warmth and snuggles.

End off and weave 4" ends back and forth several times!

Size 10 circular needles (32" cord)  and 300 yards of soft #4 medium weight yarn

Cast on 4 sts and knit across.

Repeat row 2 until 150 sts on needle ... Or desired size for blanket)

Decrease rows: K1, k2 tog, yo, k2 tog, k to end of row.

loomed hat
This is loom knitted using a 31 peg round loom - in this set pictured below, it is the lime green loom.

You will need 3 strands of baby yarn (#2 weight)  held together, OR 1 strand of number 5 or 6 weight yarn.
Rounds 1-8: E-wrap 8 rounds and knit off each round.
Brim:
MAKING A BRIM
Lift the first row/beginning edge up onto the pegs, one stitch at a time.  (This will create your 2 rows you need on the loom). Don't wrap this row.
Knit off that row.
Now, continue to wrap rows clockwise after that and knit 16 more rows.
END: Cut a good length of yarn and sew off the stitches on that last round.  Pull to gather tightly. Put yarn inside hat and weave in and out of the inside stitches at least 6 times to anchor.
You can even ad a pompom!
