I made this little blanket is about 25" square
which is a great size for a preemie or a newborn. Check with your
local NICU and hospitals to see what sizes are needed for blankets.
Approximately 1000 yards of Medium weight (#4) yarn
Size I (5.5 mm) Crochet hook
ABBREVIATIONS used: Ch = chain, dc = double crochet Chain 92 Row 1: 2 dc in 4th chain from hook, * skip 2 ch, dc, skip 2, 5 dc (makes shell) in next ch. Repeat from *across row, making 3 dc in last ch. Ch 3, turn. Row 2: Skip 3, 5 dc (in the dc of previous row), *skip 2, dc (in center dc of shell of previous row), skip 2, dc. Repeat from *across row, ending with a DC in the top of the last stitch. Ch 3, turn.
Row 3: 2 dc in base of the ch 3, skip 3, dc, *skip 2, 5 dc, skip 2, dc. Repeat from *across row, making 3 dc in last ch. Ch 3, turn. (I used a stitch marker at the end of row 3 each time, so I could keep track of which row I was on.) Repeat rows 2 and 3 for about 50 rows, depending on how long you want your baby blanket)
It doesn't need an edge but you could single crochet around it, stitch for stitch.
