This pattern was designed to be used in a setting or display. It may not make a good "play item" for smaller children.

Materials:

Size 10 Southmaid Crochet Cotton ...Black

Size 10 Southmaid Crochet Cotton ...Red

Size 5 steel hook or size to acquire gauge

3/4" diameter rubberband

3 size 4 snaps

Gauge:

9 sts = 1"

10 rows = 1"

NOTE: This pattern was designed for the new Ken doll which is a little shorter. Alteration for the Original Ken will be added where needed.

JACKET:

R1...With black, ch49, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 47 chs (48sts)

NOTE: ch 1, turn, at end of each row unless otherwise stated.

R2-R3...sc over 48 sts.

R4...sc over 14 sts, skip 1 st, sc over next 4 sts, skip 1 st, sc over next 8 sts, skip 1 st, sc over next 4 sts, skip 1 st, sc over next 14 sts (44sts)

R5...sc over 44 sts, fasten off

With right side facing you (loose black thread from chain will be on your left), and red thread,

R6...ch 2, sc over 44 sts, (44sts & 2chs)

R7...sc in 3 sts, 2sc in next st (inc made), sc over next 5 sts, inc in next st, sc over 8 sts, inc in next st, sc over next 6 sts, inc in next st, sc in next 8 sts, inc in next st, sc in next 5 sts, inc in next st, sc in last 3 sts, sc in next 2 chs. (52sts)

R8-R9..sc over 52 sts.

R10...sc over 7 sts, inc in next st, sc in next 10 sts, inc in next st, sc in next 14 sts, inc in next st, sc over next 10 sts, inc in next st, sc over last 7 sts. (56sts)

R11-R20...sc over 56 sts

Start 1st back section:

R21...sc over 15 sts (15sts)

R22...skip 1st st, sc over next 14 sts. (14sts)

R23-R28...sc over 14 sts, Fasten off

R29...attach black in back loop of 1st sc, (ch1, sc) in same st, working in back loop across row, sc in next 13 sts (14sts)

R7.. attach black in back loop of last st worked, (ch1, sc) in same st. continue working in back loops, sc over 24 sts

Start first shoulder:

R13...sc over 9 sts,

R14...skip 1st sc, sc in next 5 sts, sl st in next st

R15...skip sl st, sc in next 5 sts

R16...sc over 3 sts, sl st

R17...skip sl st, sc over 3 sts, fasten off

Start second shoulder:

R1...attach black thread in 7th unused st from 1st shoulder, (ch1, sc) in same st, sc over next 8 sts (9sts)

R2...sc over 7 sts, skip next st, sc in last st (8sts)

R3...sc over 5 sts, sl st

R4...skip sl st, sc in next 5 sts

R5...sc over 3 sts, sl st, fasten off

Start 2nd back section:

R1...with red, attach thread in 2nd unused st from front, (ch1, sc) in same st, sc in next 12 sts (13sts)

R2...sc over 11 sts, skip 1 st, sc in last st (12sts)

R3-R7..sc over 12 sts, fasten off

NOTE: for original Ken rep sc row 2 more times, fasten off

R8..Attatch black in back loop of last st worked, (ch1, sc) in same st, continue working in back loops, sc over next 11 sts (12sts)

R9...sc over 11 sts, 2sc in last st (13sts)

R10...sc over 13 sts

R11...sc over 12 sts, 2 sc in last st (14sts)

R12...sc over 14 sts

R13...sc over 12 sts, sl st in next st, (leave last st unworked)

R14..skip sl st, sc in next 8 sts

R15 ...skip 1st st, sc in next 4 sts, sl st

R16...skip sl st, sc in next 4 sts, fasten off

Sew shoulder seems together. Weave in ends and cut off.

COLLAR:

First side:

R1...With right side facing you, attach black to 3rd sc in back. (ch1, sc) in same st, sc in next 2 sts, hdc in corner, sc 8 sts evenly over shoulder, hdc in corner, sc in 3 sts in front

R2-R3..sc over 16 sts, fasten off

Second side:

R1..with right side facing you, attach black in 1st unused st from first side, (ch1, sc) in same st, sc in next 2 sts, hdc in corner, sc 8 sts evenly over shoulder, hdc in corner, sc in next 4 sts

R2-R3..sc over 17 sts, fasten off

Weave in ends and cut off.

Trim:

with red, do a running st around collar

SLEEVES: Make 2

NOTE: instructions for original Ken will be in these [ ] brackets

Starting at cuff....Ch 16(making sure you have 12" of unused thread for sewing)

R1.....Working in back ridge of chain, sc in 2nd ch from hook, and next 14 chs (15 sts)

R2 & R3.....sc over 15 sts

R4.....2 sc in first st, sc over next 14 sts (16 sts)

R5.....sc over 16 sts

R6.....sc over 15 sts, 2 sc in last st (17 sts)

R7.....sc over 17 sts

R8.....2 sc in first st, sc over next 16 sts (18 sts)

R9.....sc over 18 sts

R10...sc over first 17 sts, 2 sc in last st (19 sts)

R11...sc over 19 sts

Fasten off

Sew seams together, center seam in bottom of armhole and sew sleeve in arm hole easing in the excess at cap.

PANTS:

R1...attach black to rubberband, ch1, sc 50 sts around rubberband, join, (ch 1, turn, now and throughout)

R2..sc in same st as joining and in next 49 sts, join

R3-R19..rep R2 16 times, fasten off and weave in ends and cut off

First leg:

R1...ch 3, with right side facing you, sc in center back and next 24 sts, ch 4, turn

R2..sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 chs, sc over next 25 sts, sc in next 3 chs (31sts)

R3..sc over 31 sts

R4-R43..rep R3 32 times

R44...sc over 4 sts, (skip next st, sc in next st) 12 times, sc in last 3 sts (18sts) fasten off

Second leg:

R1...with right side facing you, ch 3, sc in 1st unused st from center front, and in next 24 sts, ch4, turn

R2-R44 ...work as for first leg

Sew crotch together, then inside of legs.

BOOTS:

Sole:

Rnd 1...With black, ch 11, 2sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 5 chs, hdc in next 3 chs, 5 hdc in last ch, (continue on other side of ch), hdc over next 3 chs,

sc in next 6 chs, join in 1st sc, join, ch1, do not turn

Rnd2...2sc in joining, sc in next 6 sts, hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in each of next 5 sts, hdc in next 4 sts, sc in next 4 sts, join, fasten off

Uppers:

Rnd 1...starting at side of sole (1st hdc of Rnd2 of sole), attach thread in back loop, (ch1, sc) in same st, continue working in back loops, sc in next 29sts, (join, ch1, do not turn)now and throughout. (30sts)

Rnd 2...sc in joining st, sc over next 29 sts

Rnd 3...sc in joining st, sc in next 5 sts, (skip 1 st, sc in next st) 3 Ts, sc in next 18 sts, (27sts)

Note: pull the sts after the skip 1 a little tight to close hole.

Rnd 4...sc in joining st, sc in next 4 sts, (skip 1 st, sc in next st) 2 Ts, sc in next 12 sts, skip 1 st, sc in next 5 sts (24sts)

Rnd 5...sc in joining st, sc in next 3 sts, (skip 1 st, sc in next st) 3 Ts, sc in next 14sts, (21sts)

Rnd 6...sc in joining st, sc in next 2 sts, (skip 1 st, sc in next st) 2 Ts, sc in next 13 sts (18sts)

Rnd 7-13...sc over 18 sts

Rnd 14...sc over 6 sts, 2sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts, 2sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts (20sts)

FINISHING:

Jacket front insert:

R1..ch 2, (sc, hdc, dc) in 2nd ch from hook, (ch 1, turn) now and throughout (3sts)

R2...2sc in top of dc, sc in top of hdc, 2 sc in last st (5sts)

R3...sc over 4 sts (hdc, 2dc) in last st (7sts)

R4...sc in top of first 2 dc, sc in top of hdc, sc in next 4 sts (8sts)

R5...2sc in first st, sc in next 6 sts, (hdc, 2dc) in last st (11sts)

R6...sc in top of first 2 dc, sc in top of hdc, sc in next 8 sts (12sts)

R7...2sc in first st, sc in next 10 sts, (hdc, 2 dc) in last st (15sts)

R8...2sc in top of 1st dc, sc in top of next dc, sc in top of next hdc, sc in next 11sts, 2sc in last st.

fasten off leaving a 10"-12" thread for sewing.

Sleeve cap:

R1...ch 2, 3sc in 2nd ch from hook, (ch 1, turn) now and throughout (3 sts)

R2..2sc in first st, sc in next st, 2 sc in last st (5 sts)

continue with 2sc in first and last st of each row until there is 13 sts.

fasten off leaving a 8"-10" thread for sewing

Sew jacket insert to front of Jacket with the longer end of the triangle on the left side. Take a few stitches in center of insert to prevent bulging.

Sew Sleeve cap in place making sure the 13scs are across shoulder & match with the black section of front and back section.

The back has one side 2 sts larger, sew snaps to front of that side and on the back of the other side.

With fabric tube paint place 3 or 4 dots on collar depending on rank.

With a heavy piece of cardboard (about the thickness of the back of a writing tablet) ...paint a section gold and one section silver...cut a small oval from the gold section and a small triangle (Star Trek style)...glue the silver over the gold and glue to front of jacket.
