    KNITTED PREEMIE or NEWBORN HAT

    Approx. 170 yds of baby or worsted weight yarn.

    Size 6 needles for lg preemie  (4-5 lbs)
    Size 8 needles (use worsted weight yarn for 6-8 lbs newborns)
  • 5 sts / inch
  • 7.5 rows / inch

  • Cast on 46 sts. (hat should measure 9" (11") across).
  • Ribbing = K1, P1 for 1"  (1.5")
  • Knit one row, purl one row for 4" (5")
    Total height will be about 5" (6.5")
    Cut a 14" yarn tail.
     
    Weave sewing needle and 14" yarn through remaining sts on needle and pull tightly to close.  No decreasing necessary. Sew up side of the hat seam.


    Tie on a pompom--please do not glue the pom pom on the top.

    This hat can be made on circular needles also. Do the knit 1 purl 1 ribbing, and then knit each round for desired height.

    Materials: #3 or # 5 needles (US size)  depending on size of hat you want and sport yarn in baby colors.
    Gauge = 5 st = 1"/  10 rows of garter stitch =1"

  • Cast on 52 stitches. (or multiples of 4)
  • Odd rows: Work in K3, P1 rib - ending with a P 1.
  • Even rows: Work K 1, P 3 rib - ending with P 3.
  • Knit for 24 rows.
  • Decrease Row 1:  Knit 2 sts together, *knit 1, knit 2 sts together - repeat from * across row. 
  • Decrease Row 2: Knit 1 row  
  • Repeat these 2 rows until 12 stitches remain.
  • Cut off yarn leaving a 15" tail; thread needle onto tail.
  • Weave the tail in and out of the hat top stitches and pull tightly. Sew back seam shut and add a pretty matching pom-pom on the top.
