    Bev's Knitted Preemie Baby Hat Patterns

    KNITTED PREEMIE HAT

    With the size 6 needles, cast on 46 sts. (hat should measure 8" across).
  • Ribbing= K1, P1 for 1"
  • Knit one row, purl one row for 4"

  • Total height will be about 5"
    Stitch up side seam and run a gathering stitch through the top. Gather and tie on a tiny pompom--please do not glue the pom pom on the top.
    To make a POM-POM:
    1) Cut a 1.2" x 2" piece of cardboard.
    2) Wrap the yarn around the 1.5" dimension 50 times.
    3) Slide the yarn carefully off the cardboard and tie a 6" piece of yarn tightly around the middle.
    4) Cut the loops and trim till lengths are even and form a ball.

    Materials: #3 or # 5 needles (US size)  depending on size of hat you want and sport yarn in baby colors.
    Gauge = 5 st = 1"/  10 rows of garter stitch =1"

  • Cast on 52 stitches. (or multiples of 4)
  • Odd rows: Work in K3, P1 rib - ending with a P 1.
  • Even rows: Work K 1, P 3 rib - ending with P 3.
  • Knit for 24 rows.
  • Decrease Row 1:  Knit 2 sts together, *knit 1, knit 2 sts together - repeat from * across row. 
  • Decrease Row 2: Knit 1 row  
  • Repeat these 2 rows until 12 stitches remain.
  • Cut off yarn leaving a 15" tail; thread needle onto tail.
  • Weave the tail in and out of the hat top stitches and pull tightly. Sew back seam shut and add a pretty matching pom-pom on the top.


  • I invented this pattern on a long ride to Toronto. It turned out really cute.

    Size 8 needles and 1 oz sport yarn or baby yarn.
    Cast on 50 sts

  • Row 1: in ribbing...k 2, p2 across
  • Row 2: p2, k2 across.
  • Continue in ribbing for a total of 10 rows.
  • Row 9: K across row.
  • Row 10: P across row.
  • Continue till hat measures 5".
  • Decrease row 1: (k2, k2 together, k2) to end of row.
  • Decrease row 2: Purl across.
  • Decress 3: K2, k2 together, (k4, k2 together, k4) to end of row.
  • Decrease row 4: Purl across.
  • Decrease row 5: K2, k2 together, (k3, k2 together, k3) to end of row.
  • Decrease row 6: Purl across.
  • End off.

  • Fold hat in half lengthwise (inside out) and whip stitch shut. Add a tiny pompom if you wish.
