Maureen's Traveling Teddy Bear

copyright 2012 Maureen Moniz - all rights reserved
size 5 needles and small amount of worsted weight yarn (perhaps 1/2 oz)

Cast on 30 sts

Garter stitch (knit) for 40 rows ( 20 ridges)
Row 41: knit across
Row 42: k 1, P 13, k across.

Repeat rows 41 and 42 until you have a stockinette stitch piece big enough to embroider a face... usually about 18-20 rows ( 9 or 10 more ridges on the garter stitch half.)

Bind off. Leave a 20" tail.
Sew the side seam, stuff as tightly or as loosely as you like, and sew the bottom closed.
Embroider whatever type of face you like.. then comes fashioning the ears... take another piece of yarn and " gather" up the ears, tie tightly and bring the thread to the inside. I usually go about 3/8" to 1/2 " in from the edge and of the finished piece and loop the thread around the outside, and pull... this makes a nice tight " ear".
Repeat on the other side.

Then, I take the remnant of yarn and run a single basting stitch around the area where the neck would be, pull, and secure, then cover that with a piece of ribbon.
