Margaret's Hat

Using Simply Soft or any soft worsted, cast on correct number of stitches for the size you want to make and use either a smaller size needles for ribbing, or the same size for whole hat, it's  personal preference.

Size 6 (4.00 mm) & 8 (5.00) needles
(Multiples of 8)
Size 6 (4.00) needles - Cast on 40 (preemie), 48 (newborn), 56 (2-6 mths), 64 (6 -18 mths), 72 (2-4 yrs), 80 (5-10 yrs), (88 for teen/adult)

YARN: The pink hat was made using Lion Brand Pound of Love worsted weight yarn. (British 10 ply) The red, white, and green hat was made using Bernat Baby yarn. (DK yarn)

Rib (K1, P1) for 2 inches for a folded brim. If you want a quicker result, you can knit in stockinette (knit 1 row, purl one row) for 10 rows.

christmas version PATTERN Stitch
Change to size 8 needles and (VERY IMPORTANT!) increase 1 stitch in the first row of the pattern stitch. Work the following pattern until work measures 3" preemie; 4" newborn - 6 mths; 5" 6-18 mths; 6" 2-10 yrs; 7" for teen/adult (with either brim variation)

1st row: Increase one stitch - Using A, knit 
2nd row: Using A, purl
3rd row: Using B, k1, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end.  (slip stitches purlwise)
4th row: Same as 3rd row.
5th row: Using B Knit
6th row: Using B purl
7th and 8th: As 3rd row but using A instead of B.

Repeat rows 3-8 till hat is 2" from desired height.

Begin decrease:

(k6, k2tog) to end stitch, k1
Purl
(k5, k2tog) to end stitch, k1
Purl
(k4, k2tog) to end stitch, k1
Purl
(k3, k2tog) to end stitch, k1
Purl
(k2, k2tog) to end stitch, k1
Purl
(k1, k2tog) to end stitch, k1
Purl
(k2tog) to end stitch, k1

Cut an 8 inch end and thread through stitches to gather and then fold in half to seam hat.
