4 oz soft worsted weight, drapey yarn like Simply Soft (this ensures the hat 'drapes')
J Crochet Hook

Chain 5 and slip stitch to 1st chain to form a ring.
Rnd 1:  Chain 3 (counts as 1st DC); make 11 more dcs in ring. (12 dcs)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in
base of the ch 3, make 2 dc in each dc, including base of ch 3. Join with sl st in top of chain 3. (24 sts)

Rnd 3: Ch 3, 
dc in base of the ch 3, *dc in next dc, make 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * around and join with slip stitch in top of chain 3 (36 dc)

Rnd 4: Ch 3,
dc in base of the ch 3, *dc in next 2 dcs, 2 dcs in next dc, repeat from * around and join with slip stitch in top of chain 3. (48 dcs)

Rnd 5:
Ch 3, dc in base of the ch 3, *dc in next 3 dcs, 2 dcs in next dc, repeat from * around and join with slip stitch in top of chain 3. (60 dcs)

Rnd 6: 
Ch 3, dc in base of the ch 3, *dc in next  4 dcs, 2 dcs in next dc, repeat from * around and join with slip stitch in top of chain 3. (72)

Rnd 7: 
Ch 3, dc in base of the ch 3, *dc in next 5 dcs, 2 dcs in next dc, repeat from * around and join with slip stitch in top of chain 3. (84 dcs)

Rnd 8 - 15: 
Ch 3, dc in base of the ch 3,  dc in next stitch and in each one around.  Join with slip stitch in top of chain 3

Rnd 16: Ch 1 *sc in next stitch. Sc 2 together.  repeat from * around. Join.

Rnd 17-19: Get back to 50 sts by * sc in next 7 sts, sc 2 together, repeat from * around,  Don't join at the end of the round.  Just keep going till you are back down to 50 sts

(Approx. 10 rows) Sc in each stitch around for 2" total of sc rounds, not joining until the end of the last round.  Join with sl st and cut a 4" tail.  Weave in tails.
