This pattern was created by Joy Coetzee in South Africa, so there are metric/Britsh directs and we have tried to do the conversion to US standard names for you.
These would be wonderful to send to the BABY PROJECT to our troops in Afghanistan where they hand them out to the kids in the refugee camp and orphanages.

Double knitting  (Worsted weight yarn)
Crochet hook 5.00 mm  (Size H)

To fit 4/5 years old

(American terms typed in red: treble = double crochet (dc); double crochet = single crochet (sc))
 
BACK
Chain 53
1
st row – 2 trebles (2 dcs) into 4th chain from hook [skip 2 chains, 5 trebles (5 dc) into next chain, skip 2 chains, 1 treble (1 dc) into each of next 2 chains] 7 shells across, turn.

2nd row3 chains, 1 treble (1 dc) into next treble (dc), skip 2 trebles (2 dcs), 5 trebles (5 dcs) into next treble (dc), skip 2 trebles (dcs), 1 treble (1 dc) in each of next 2 trebles (dcs)), 6 shells across, skip 2 trebles (dcs), 5 trebles (5 dcs) into next treble (dc), skip 2 trebles (dcs), 1 treble (1 dc) into next treble (dc) and 1 treble (1 dc) into next chain, turn.

Repeat last row until 29 rows have been worked, turn.

Last row3 chains, 1 treble (1 dc) into next treble (dc), [1 treble (dc), 3 double crochet (3 sc), 1 treble (1 dc) into next 5 treble (5 dc) group, 1 treble (1 group dcs) into each of next 2 trebles (dcs)] , twice.

Fasten off.

Rejoin wool (yarn) at opposite side, 3 chains, 1 treble (1 dc) into next treble (dc),  [1 treble (1 dc), 3 double crochet (3 sc), 1 treble (1 dc) into next 5 treble (5 dcs) group, 1 treble (1 dc) into each of next 2 trebles (2 dcs)], twice.

Fasten off.

FRONT
Work as for back until 26 rows have been worked.

SHAPE NECK
Next row 3 chains, 1 treble (1 dc) into next treble (dc) (skip 2 trebles (dcs), 5 trebles (5 dcs) into next treble (dc), skip 2 trebles (dc), 1 treble (1 dc) into each of next 2 trebles (dcs)), twice, turn.

Repeat last row twice.

Next row 3 chains, 1 treble (1 dc)  into next treble (dc), [1 treble (dc), 3 double crochets (3 scs), 1 treble (1 dc) into next 5 trebles (dcs) group, 1 treble (1 dc) into each of next 2 trebles (2 dcs)], twice

Fasten off.
Rejoin wool (yarn) at opposite side and work to correspond with first side.

TO MAKE UP
Join shoulder seams.  Join side seams to within 10 rows of the shoulder seam. Optional – work shell edging of 1 double crochet (1 dc), 2 trebles (2 dcs), 1 double crochet (1 dc) round armhole and lower edges.
