This newborn baby set is a great beginners crochet set.  If you are just learning and know how to single crochet, this one is for you!  Just right to print out for teaching classes on how to crochet. 


Materials needed:  
Worsted Weight # 4 yarn
Size H (5 mm) hook  and a yarn sewing needle
Abbreviations: ch = chain, sc = single crochet, st/s = stitch/es, BLO = back loop only, sl st = slip stitch

HAT - made flat into approx. 6" tall, x 10.5" long rectangle (It will stretch!)
Chain  23 (#4 weight yarn) 25 (with baby #3 weight yarn)
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and into each ch across row.  Ch 1, turn  (22 stitches) (24 sts)
Rows 2 - 34 (36): Sc in  back loop of 2nd Sc from hook and in BLO (see photo on right) of each sc across.  Ch 1, turn. (22 sts) (24 sts)
Last row, don't chain 1 or turn.  End off with 14" strand of yarn.
Fold hat in half and whip stitch shut, then weave in and out of top sts, pull to gather, and tie off ends, weave in ends.

Booties - made flat.  Make 2.
Ch 16  (ch 18 for baby weight yarn)
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, turn  (15 stitches)
Rows 2 - 12 (13): Sc in  back loop of 2nd Sc from hook and in Back Loop Only of each Sc across.  Ch 1, turn. (15 stitches) (17 sts)
Last row, don't ch 1 or turn.  End off with 14" strand of yarn.

Weave yarn in and out of  top of bootie stitches and pull to gather the toe.  Now whip stitch the 2 sides of the top of bootie to the 'middle' of the bootie to close the top.  Back stitch 3 sts to anchor. Cut yarn. Go to other end of bootie, fold bootie in half and whip stitch up the heel/back of bootie.  Back stitch 3 sts to anchor. Cut yarn.

Cuff of Bootie
Using a contrast color yarn, Sc in each "stitch" around cuff of bootie, join with a slip stitch to top of first Sc. Ch 1 and Sc in each Sc around top.  Repeat from * around cuff one more time.  Join with sl st to end.  Cut 3" yarn and weave end inside the bootie.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, turn  (22 sts)
Rows 2 - 22: Sc in  back loop of 2nd Sc from hook and in BLO of each Sc across.  Ch 1, turn. (22 sts)
Last row, don't ch 1 or turn.  End off with 14" strand of yarn.
