This is a quick and easy to knit hat to make for our soldiers, sailor, airmen to wear.  It gets very cold in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places where our brave troops are serving our country and preserving the freedoms we take for granted.

Adult size - FOR GROUND TROOPS:  (Please use dark, muted colors ONLY (brown, chamo, black, dark green, navy, grey).
Sizes 7 and 8 knitting needles
About 200 yards worsted weight soft, washable or superwash 100% WOOL yarn - hats made for the troops need to be made of wool for warmth, and because wool is considered non-flammable and will not melt into the scalp during fires as acrylic yarn will. (about 200 yds)

Gauge: 4.5 sts per inch

Adult men size: Cast on 88 sts using smaller sized needles

(84 sts for women and teens, 72 sts for school age, 64 sts for 18 months to 4 yrs)

Switch to size 8 needles:
Row 1: K2, P2, K2 across line, ending with P2.

Row 2 - 6:  Repeat Row 1.
Row 7: Knit across
Row 8: Purl across
Repeat these 2 rows until hat is 8 1/2" from start, ending on a knit row.
On the knit row- K2 together across the row.
Next row: Purl
Next row: K2 together across
Last row: Purl across.  Cut a 14" tail of yarn, thread a yarn needle with it.  Carefully pull the last row of knitting from the needle and thread the needle through every stitch.  Pull tightly then whip stitch the seam shut.  Without a brim the ground troops can easily stuff these in their pocket or wear under a helmet.
