Bev's Beginner Hat

This is for a newborn baby hat. Hat height =5" Length= 10.5"
Size 8 (5.00 mm) knitting needles 

1 oz of soft worsted weight yarn.
Cast on 23 (26) stitches (this will be the height)

Knit each row for 64 rows ( 9" rectangle-- hat fits 3 lbers thru 6 lbers) 
or (26 sts) and 72 rows (10.5" rectangle , fits 5 lbers thru 8 lbers - this is the width)

FINISHING: Bind off stitches; fold hat in half widthwise, and whip stitch the side seam closed.

Weave yarn in and out of the stitches at the top and pull to gather top of hat or sew flat to make a 'jester style' hat.  Sew tassles on each side as in photo.

Weave the yarn inside the top of the hat, and tie the strands into a knot, or weave in and out to secure.
