Preemie Hat in 2 Variations

Materials:
4 dbl pt needles, size 3.5mm (US 4)
approx ½ ounce sports weight/baby yarn
(gauge:4” = 22 st/30 r  using 4mm (US 8) needles)

Seed Stitch:
When working with double-points, I like to place one stitch marker at the beginning of the row so I can feel it when I’m nearing the end of a round.
Cast on 60 stitches and divide it evenly over 3 needles (be careful not to twist)
rows 1 – 8:  k1, p1 ribbing
rows 9 and all odd rows:  k2, p2 around
rows 10 and all even rows: p2, k2 around
repeat rows 9 and 10 until 20 seed stitch rows are completed (28 rows total).

decreases:
row 29: k2tog, p8 – repeat across row
row 30: k2tog, p7 – repeat across row
row 31: k2tog, p6 – repeat across row
row 32: k2tog, p5 – repeat across row
row 33: k2tog, p4 – repeat across row
row 34: k2tog, p3 – repeat across row
row 35: k2tog, p2 – repeat across row
row 36: k2tog, p1 – repeat across row
row 37: k2tog across row (6 stitches remain)

top knot and finishing:
Knit all stitches for 18 rows (about 1 ½”)
Cut 6” tail and thread through loops
Pull tight, knit and weave through inside of stitches to secure.  Clip.
Tie into a little knot close to top of hat
Weave in end from cast on stitches and clip.

Patterned Stockinette Stitch

rows 1 – 8: as above
rows 9 – 28: knit 9, p1 – repeat across row

decreases:
row 29: k2tog, k8 – repeat across row
row 30: k2tog, k7 – repeat across row
row 31: k2tog, k6 – repeat across row
row 32: k2tog, k5 – repeat across row
row 33: k2tog, k4 – repeat across row
row 34: k2tog, k3 – repeat across row
row 35: k2tog, k2 – repeat across row
row 36: k2tog, k1 – repeat across row
row 37: k2tog across row (6 stitches remain)

Finish hat (beginning with top knot) as above.
