conrads-hatBev's Hat for Conrad - made in the round
Copyright Beverly A. Qualheim 2004, 2007 - All Rights Reserved
Fits age 1 year - 18 months
Circular needles size 9 or dp needles so you are knitting in the round  (and 2 dp needles size 8 for the earflaps)
1 oz each of 3 colors of Red Heart Super Saver 4 ply Worsted Weight Yarn
(I used red, blue and green for Conrad's hat)

Cast on 60 sts
BRIM use color #1  -
RNDS 1 - 10: Knit 2, Purl 2 around
Change to color #2
Next 12 RNDS - Knit each rnd.
Change to color #3
Next 2
RNDS - Knit each rnd.
Change back to color #1
Knit one
RND.
Now, on this next
rnd, you will be knitting 3 sts alternating in each color.  It doesn't work our perfectly evenly in colors at the end, but it isn't really noticable.
Next
RNDS - Go back to color #1 and knit 5 more rnds.
Change to color #2
Knit 4
RNDS
Change to color #3
Knit 2
RNDS, then begin decrease.
DECREASE:  Knit 3 sts, Knit 2 sts together going through the back of the 2 sts so it is more hidden. Go around hat doing this.
Repeat this
rnd once more, making sure you follow the decreases in the sts of the previous row.

Change back to color #1 again and knit 3 more
RNDS without decreasing.

FINISHING Hat:
Cut yarn tail about 1 foot long, add a yarn needle to it, and carefully remove the sts from the circular needles, one at a time, threading the tail through each stitch and then taking it off the needles.
When all sts are off the needles, pull yarn tightly to gather.  Knot the yarn close to the hat, and cut a tail of yarn 3" long.  Weave this back under a few stitches inside hat.
Make a pompom for the top and tie it in tightly

EAR FLAPS:
ROLL UP the BRIM>>>> Use
color #2 and dp needles, pick up 8 sts on one side of hat.  (I make them slightly more toward the front of the hat since the ears are slightly forward.
Rows 1 - 7:  Knit each row (garter st)
Row 8 - 13: Cast off 1 st at the beginning of each row, till you are down to just 2 sts. Knit those 2 sts for 10". Cast off.

Repeat this flap on the other side of the hat using color #3.
