Row 1: Starting in the 4th chain from the hook, make (1 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) all in the same st.  *Skip 2 chs, (2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) in next st, *skip 2 ch, (2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) in next st *, repeat from * to * across, end (2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) in the last ch.  Ch 2, turn.
Row 2: Work (1 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) in first 'ch2 space', *work (2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) in next ch2 space, *, repeat from * to * across.
Row 3-12 (15): Repeat row 2.  End off.
Fold hat in half and whip st the sides together, and then gather the chain-side (your first row) and pull to gather.  Add a pom pom.
OR
Bev's Fun Loppy Top
You can make a pompom or make Bev's Fun loopy top!
Attach the yarn at the top of the hat after gathering.
Ch 12, attach the ch with a sl st on the other side of the top of hat. Ch 12 and attach it back across the hat somewhere, keep doing this till the top is full of these chains going back and forth across the top where the pop pom would normally be.

Ch 3
Rnd 1 - 6 sc in 3rd chain from hook, join. (7sc)
Rnd 2 - ch 2, sc in same st. 2 sc in each st around and join. (14 sc)
Rnd 3 - ch 2, sc in each st around, sc in beginning st, join (15 sc)
Rnd 4 - ch 2, sc in each st around, sc in beginning st, join (16 sc)
Rnd 5 - ch 2, sc in each st around, sc in beginning st, join (17 sc)
Rnd 6 - ch 3, dc in next 12 stitches, chain 2 and turn (13 dc)
Rnd 7 - sc in next 12 stitches, chain 3 and turn (13 sc)
Rnd 8 - dc in next 12 stitches (13 dc)

Turn inside out and sew back seam. Turn right side out.

Cuff:
Rnd 1 - join with slip st in back seam, ch 3, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st,
           2 dc in next st, dc in next 6 stitches across front, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st,
           2 dc in next st, join.
Rnd 2 - ch 3, dc in each st around, join.
Rnd 3 - ch 3, dc in each st around, join.
Rnd 4 - ch 3, dc in each st around, join.
Rnd 5 - ch 1, sc in same st, *ch 2, sc in next st*, repeat from * to *, ending with slip st in
beg sc, join.

Tie:
Ch 70, weave through first row of cuff, tie in bow in front of bootie.

Cuff can be turned down or left up.

Size G hook
3-ply sport weight yarn

Leave about 12" of yarn at beginning before making chain.
Ch 38 (preemie) or ch 44 (newborn) and sl st in first chain to form a circle.  Do not twist chain.

Row 1:  Ch 3, make (1 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) all in the same st.
*Skip 2 chs, (2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) in next st*
Repeat from * to * around.  Sl st in 3rd st of ch 3 to join.  Turn.

Row 2:  Sl st into first 'ch 2 space'.
Ch 3, make (1 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) all in the same space.
*Work (2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) in next ch 2 space*
Repeat from * to * around.  Sl st in 3rd st of ch 3 to join.  Turn.

Rows 3-12 (15):  Repeat row 2.  End off.

Finishing:  Using yarn needle and 12" of yarn left at beginning, gather the beginning chain end, pull together, and tie off to form top of hat.  Weave in
loose ends inside the hat.

Add a pom pom OR make Bev's fun loopy top:
Attach yarn at the top where the pom pom would normally be.
Ch 12, attach the ch with a sl st on the other side of the top of hat.  Ch 12 and attach it back across the hat somewhere. Keep doing this till the top is
full of these chains going back and forth.
