Large Granny Square Blankie for kids

Abbreviation info:  Ch = chain, dc = double crochet, rnds = rounds, sl st = slip stitch, sk = skip,  sp = space, rep = repeat

Make a large Granny square from a basic pattern, and add your own edging or use ours!

Basic GRANNY SQUARE  ~ make it 40 rnds. 
Afghan is approximately 44" x 44" when finished.

About 25-30 oz of soft worsted weight, 4 ply yarn
Size G crochet hook
yarn needle

Ch 5 and sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as a dc in this and all following rnds), 2 dc in ring; (ch 3, 3 dc in ring) 3 times; ch 2; join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3; finish off.
(or if using one color, sl st to the next ch 3 space).
Rnd 2: Join color B in any ch-3 sp; ch 3, in same sp work (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc): corner made; * ch 1, sk next 3 dc, in next ch-3 sp work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc): corner made; rep from * twice more; ch 1, sk next 3 dc; join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3
Rnd 3: Join color C in any ch-3 corner sp: ch 3, in same sp work (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc): corner made; * ch 1, sk next 3 dc, 3 dc in next ch-l sp: 3-dc group made; ch 1, sk next 3 dc, in next ch-3 corner sp work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc): corner made; rep from * twice more; ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-l sp: 3-dc group made; ch 1, sk next 3 dc;
join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3; finish off.

Work the next rounds exactly the same but work the following into each ch1 sp on each side of square. (Ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1).  Continue until afghan is 40 rnds.  Then add the edging.

EDGING:
Rnd 1 and 2 of edging: Sc around entire afghan twice, making 3 sc in each corner.
Final edging rnd: 5 dc in nearest sc, skip 2 sc, 1 sc, *5 dc in the next sc, skip 2 dc, 5 dc in next sc.  *repeat around.
