Queen Elizabeth Cake

1 cup chopped dates
1 cup boiling water
1 tsp. baking soda
Cook above ingredients for 3 minutes
Cream together 1 cup of white sugar  and 4 Tblsp. butter and then add one egg.
Then add 1 1/2 cups sifted flour, 1/2 tsp salt and one tsp baking powder and mix well.
Bake at 350 degrees for thirty minutes in 9" square pan.
While cake is baking, mix together 5 Tblsp brown sugar, 2 Tblsp cream or milk and 3 Tblsp butter.  Then add 1/2 cup coconut.  Spread on top of hot cake and broil until bubbles.
