Bev's  version of the 'Mile-an-Hour Afghan'!

unknown copyright of the original - I'm guessing it's Sarah of the Old Testament!

Lots of people call this the mile-a-minute afghan, but I call it 'Mile-an-Hour' which is a bit more accurate!

    Materials:
Approx. 2000 yds of worsted weight (#4) yarn
    Crochet Hook Size H
    Yarn needle
Afghan measures approximately 45" X 62"  (but make it as large or small as you wish.)

FIRST STRIP (Make several):  With color 1 , ch 6.  Sl st to beg ch to form ring.
Row 1:  Ch 3; work 3 dc, ch 3 and 3 dc in ring.  MARK THIS ROW WITH CONTRASTING COLOR THREAD AS RIGHT SIDE. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2:  Skip first 3-dc shell; work 3 dc, ch 3 and 3 dc in next ch 3 sp between shells; skip next 3-dc shell; dc in sp between last dc of shell and next ch-3 turning ch.  Ch 3, turn.
Rep Row 2 until 75 shells have been completed.  At end of last row, do not ch 3, turn.  Fasten off.

BORDER:  With right side facing, attach color 3 to beg ring; ch 3 to count as 1 dc; work 2 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc in same ring -- POINT MADE AT END OF STRIP; now start working across long side of strip as follows: ch 1, skip next shell; work 3 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc in next sp formed by a dc
OR a ch-3 turning ch; * now work 3 dc in each sp (formed by a dc or turning ch) across long side edge to within last sp on edge; work 3 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc in last sp, ch 1 skip next shell *;  work 3 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc in next ch-3 sp between shells for point at opposite end of strip, ch 1, skip next shell; work 3 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc in next sp; rep from * to * once MORE.

Sl st to the top of beginning ch-3 to join.  Fasten off.

SECOND STRIP (Make 6):  Starting with color 2  repeat directions as for first strip.

JOINING:  Alternating strips so a color 1 strip is on each side, and having all shells point in the same direction, and holding strips wrong sides together, whipstitch across long sides through BACK LPS ONLY with variagated yarn. I have also seen people sl st this together, but I prefer sewing.

OUTER EDGE:  With right side facing, attach Color 2 (white)  to any corner sp, ch 1, 3 sc in sp; work sc in each st around including joining sts and working 3 sc in outer ch-2 sp and skipping joinings at inside corners.  Sl to beg sc to join.
    Fasten off.

You can also make a strip or 2 and mail them to Dawn Marks who makes them into warm blankets for veterans, hospitals, homeless etc.
