Sent to Bev Qualheim and permission to use given by Mary Ann West who says:  "This was given to me (~1980) by the N.I.C.U. of Sinai Hospital in the Detroit area, MI  for use in making infant wear.  Think of this blanket as a "giant  dishcloth" "  Please make one for a needy baby at a  Children's Hospital near you.  A great way to celebrate  NEW LIFE!

Diagonal Garter Stitch Afghan

Knitting Worsted: #10 needles
(16-20 oz. yarn)
Sport yarn: #8 needles
Tweed--several strands held together
CO 4 sts.
Row1: K1, inc. 1 st between sts, k2, inc. 1 st  between sts, k1. (Make all inc. this way)
Row2: K across.
Row3: K1, inc. 1, k to last st, inc. 1, k1. ( Mark this for right side with a safety pin.)
Row 4: K across.
Repeat. rows 3 & 4 for desired length of side-- 180 ridges is about 36"long.
Corner: K1, inc. 1, k to last 3 sts., k 2 tog., k1.
Next row: K across.
Repeat. Last 2 rows 3 times more....
Next row: K1, k2 tog., k to last 3 sts, k 2 tog., k1.
Next row: K across.
Repeat last 2 rows until 4 sts. remain.  Bind off loosely.
Sew in ends.
