Cotton Knit Hat for Women
By Beth Koskie

Materials:
Star Classic Elite Yarns, 1-50 gram skein MC (main color) and ½-50 gram skein CC (contrasting color)
Size 6 – 16” circular needles
Size 6 dpn (or second circular needle) for decreases
Yarn needle

(note: yarn used in photo is a 99% cotton, 1% lycra yarn that is very “stretchy”, so it springs back and stretches for wear; if you use non-stretch cotton yarn, you’ll need to start with 90 stitches rather than 100)

Directions:

Cast on 100 (90 for non-stretch yarn) stitches, join being careful not to twist the stitches.
Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 1.5”.
Work in stockinette stitch (on circulars, this is knit every row) until the whole piece measures 7” long.
If you want to work a stripe pattern like the picture, after ribbing work as follows:
2 rows MC, 2 rows CC, * 4 rows MC, 2 rows CC, repeat from * 7 more times until you have 9 CC stripes, work rest of hat in MC.

Decrease as follows, switching to dpn or using second circular when it gets small enough to be too tight:
*K8, K2tog, repeat from * around (90 stitches).
  Knit one round even.
*K7, K2tog, repeat from * around (80 stitches).
  Knit one round even.
*K6, K2tog, repeat from * around (70 stitches).
  Knit one round even.
*K5, K2tog, repeat from * around (60 stitches).
  Knit one round even.
*K4, K2tog, repeat from * around (50 stitches). (do not work any more rounds even)
*K3, K2tog, repeat from * around (40 stitches).
*K2tog, repeat from * around (20 stitches).
*K2tog, repeat from * around (10 stitches).

Cut length of yarn and thread through needle, then weave through remaining stitches and pull tight; end off and weave in all ends on inside of hat.
