Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the LDS
Humanitarian Center

DOES
THE HUMANITARIAN CENTER ACCEPT NEWBORN AND PREEMIE HATS?
All donations
are accepted and channeled to groups that can use them. However, there
is not a specific need at the Center for these items. It is
suggested that they be given out on a local level in your own community,
etc.
WHAT
ABOUT LOOMED, CROCHETED AND KNITTED HATS?
The Humanitarian
Center receives thousands and thousands of hats. They get so many that
they are often distributed in used clothing
bales, etc. It
is suggested that, if hats can be distributed to homeless shelters,
schools, etc. in your local area, rather than sending them to the
Center, it would be a good idea.
* If you would like to use up yarn,
make children's MITTENS
and SLIPPERS and SOCKS as
those are always needed!
ARE
KNITTED AND CROCHETED AFGHANS NEEDED BY THE CENTER?
Christy also
mentioned that there is not a specific need for yarn afghans at the
Center. They are not distributed with quilts, blankets, etc. They
are sometimes sent out with Medical items, but are most times
distributed with items marked from Domestic Use Only. She suggested that
these items might best be given in your local area to Convalescent
Centers, Cancer treatment Centers, hospitals, etc.
CLARIFICATION
ABOUT PATRIOTIC, RELIGIOUS SYMBOLS, MILITARY THEMES?
In talking to
Service Coordinator, Christy Boyer at the Center yesterday, she says
that items and fabric should not have any flags, religious symbols
(such as crosses, star of David, Buddha, etc.) or military themes
(tanks, etc.).
However, on the
direct subject of mittens (that came up the other day), there is no
problem with red, white, and blue yarn combinations in items. I was glad
to get clarification on that because even I have had confusion
over that. I had made some baby nightgowns that were white with blue
pinstripes and had sleeves that had lines of blue stars with tiny
red pinstripes on white fabric. She said they were totally
acceptable.
Items that do
come into the Center that have the above fabric, etc. are still accepted
but are labeled for Domestic Use Only and are given to Homeless
Shelters, US distribution, etc.
DOES
THE HUMANITARIAN CENTER DONATE ITEMS TO AMERICAN INDIAN
RESERVATIONS?
The Center will
ship items to any group that is in need. A request must come through
local LDS priesthood authority for the area the group is in. It is
then processed through General Church Authority and the Center is
notified. Because of the growing Church size, it is necessary that all
such requests be done under priesthood leadership to avoid
misuse, etc.
RECEIPT
NOTIFICATION OF PACKAGES SENT TO THE CENTER
The Humanitarian
Center does not have any method set up for notification of
packages received at their Shipping Docks. Because a myriad of packages
come in by hand delivery, shipment from numerous DIs, various carriers
like UPS, Airborne, US Mail, etc., it isn't an easy task to send out
this type of receipt notification. If you want to make sure your
package is received, either do so with a tracking number or delivery
confirmation by the mail carrier.
I hope this
information is helpful to all of you. The Humanitarian Center appreciates so
much the giving hearts of those who reach out to others.
