Egg Cozy
Copyright Bev Qualheim 1997-All Rights Reserved

When I was a child in England, we always had egg cozies to cover our boiled eggs which sat in a little egg cup. It would keep the eggs warm till we were ready to cut off the top and eat them. My mom used to knit them and I have finally figured out how she did it and thought I would share that with you.  Plus, I discovered by changing the pattern a little, this makes a cute, cuddly toy for a baby!

Chicken Toy
Any color 4 ply, worsted weight yarn. Use up your scraps. Only need a few yards for the chicken. Small amount of batting.
Knitting needles size 8
Cast on 30 sts
Row 1: Increase 1 st, K2, P2 across and increase 1 st in last st. (32 sts)
Rows 2: K2, P2 across.
Rows 3-5: Repeat row 2.
Rows 6-18: Knit.
Row 19: Cast off 10 sts, place 12 sts on holder, and cast off remaining 10 sts.
Row 20: Put the holder sts back onto your needles and knit.
Rows 21-31: Knit across.
Row 32: Cast off leaving a 12" tail of yarn.
Fold chicken in half width wise and stitch around seam .  Stuff lightly with batting and stitch across bottom to close seams.
Use black yarn and stitch an eye on each side of head, then use a small piece of orange yarn and stitch a tiny beak on the front of the face.. I also use red yarn and make loops of yarn on top of the head.  Any colors will do though.
