These are a fave with my kids!
1/2 c. Crisco or other shortening
1/2 c. margarine - softened
1 cup powdered sugar
1 1/2 tsp almond extract
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 c. all purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp red food color
1/2 cup crushed peppermint candies
1/2 cup granulated sugar
Heat oven to 375 f. Mix all the wet
ingredients thoroughly, add flour and salt. Divide dough in half
and blend red food color into one half.
To make each candy cane, shape 1 tsp of
dough into a 'rope'- roll back and forth on a lightly floured board.
Place the ropes side by side and press gently, then twist. Place
on a greased cookie sheet and curve the top of the cookie to form the cane
shape. Bake about 9 mins until lightly browned. Mix candy and sugar
and sprinkle on top of hot cookies.
