Beth's Cotton Summer Hat
By Beth Koskie
(this hat is adapted from Bev’s Summer Preemie/Newborn Hat pattern, and should measure 18-19” around before “stretching”  Beth crochets tightly)

Materials:
Cotton yarn (for the model I used Star Classic Elite Yarns, which is 99% cotton, 1% lycra; it took 2-50 gram skeins of cream)
Size G hook

Ch 80 (if you want a larger/smaller size, add/decrease in multiples of 6)

Row 1: Starting in the 4th chain from the hook, make (1 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) all in the same stitch. *Skip 2 chs, (2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) in next st*, repeat from * to * across, end (2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) in last ch.  Ch 2, turn. (I had 25 shells in the row)
Row 2: Work (1 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) in first “ch 2 space”, * work (2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) in next ch2 space*, repeat from * to * across.
Rows 3-28: Repeat row 2.  End off.

With right sides, together, fold hat in half and whip st the sides together, then gather the original chain row and pull tight to gather; end off and weave in ends.  Turn to right side out, and fold up a couple of inches for “brim”.
